Saskatchewan
Some of the world’s largest wheat fields can be found in Saskatchewan, the flattest of Canada’s three prairie provinces. The large majority of its nearly 980,000 citizens live in the southern 1/3 of the province, home to its largest city, Saskatoon and the capital, Regina. (The northern one third of the province is part of the harsh and rocky Canadian Shield.) Like much of its neighbour to the west, Alberta, Saskatchewan has moderately cold and relatively dry winter weather. After Alberta, it has the lowest annual snowfall in Canada, and with no mountainous areas, Saskatchewan has no major winter resort areas or attractions. A few small ski centres do exist, however, and visitors seeking to discover the Canadian heartland can also enjoy winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice-skating on its many frozen rivers and lakes.
